We have awarded 5,500 scholarships to date. We are inspired every day by the tenacity and dedication of these young women! Here are just a few of their stories.
"Although many girls my age in my village have dropped out because of early marriages, unwanted pregnancies, and poverty, Sisters to School has allowed me to stay in school through benefits like scholarships, toiletries and tutoring, which have made everything so much easier. I am now one of the few girls in my village who continued her studies until high school!
The program has allowed me to gain knowledge and skills, to be prepared for challenges that may arise in life and how to overcome them. Thanks to the program, my parents now believe in the importance of girls' education. I would like to thank the Sisters to School program and Women’s Global Education Project for their support, commitment and dynamism!”
"Thanks to this program, I have become a respected woman leader in my viollage. I am committed to promoting the development of my community. What has struck me most about this program is the love our students have for our activities and seeing their skills progress! Moreover, our entire community has taken an active interest in participating and supporting girls’ education. Thank you!"
"Before joining the Sisters to School program, my parents really struggled to pay for my school fees and supplies. They did not value education, they weren’t encouraging, and no one in my family ever asked about how I was doing in school.
When I started taking computer classes, I did not even know how to turn on a computer, but thanks to WGEP’s workshops, I can now even do my own online research.
On the financial level, this program is a relief for my parents because it pays my registration fees, my toiletries, and my school supplies. On the social side, the program has taught me about managing violence against girls, early marriage and early pregnancy and let me meet with pyschological counselors. On the educational side, the tutoring classes allowed me to improve my grades and succeed in school.
The program is an inspiration to me because of all the benefits that it has given me. I would like to be a woman leader and run such programs in order to help others in the future!"
"The Sisters to School program has helped me so much by alleviating my expenses so that I can focus on studying and succeeding. It enables girls to acquire something that can never be taken away: an education.”
"I was fortunate to become a WGEP Sisters to School scholar. This program helped me throughout high school, allowing me to get tutoring to strengthen my language skills and improve my grades considerably. I also benefited from having a psychologist at our disposal through the program. With this support, I was among the top ten graduating students and was admitted to an esteemed university!"
"Before entering the program, my parents did not understand the importance of educating girls, so I did not get much encouragement at home.
But then I was given a scholarship to public school at the age of 7 through the Sisters to School program! The scholarship paid for my registration fees, toiletries, my health insurance, clothes, meals, and tutoring.
Now, thanks to the program that supported me and helped me get good grades in school, I have managed to gain the trust and confidence of my father. He is now interested in my studies, and he helps me a lot with my school work, which was not the case before.
Thank you very much to Sisters to School for supporting me from primary school all the way to the final year of high school!"
"Unfortunately, my family lives in a community that is not very supportive of girls ' education. Many girls my age have not had the chance to attend school at all, or have been married off very early to start their own families. However, I am fortunate enough to go to school thanks to the Sisters to School program!
The program helped make my parents aware of the importance of education. With their support, I have had the opportunity to complete my studies all the way from elementary to high school. This year is my ninth year as a WGEP scholar!
I love school. I am even among the best students in my level! The program has eased the financial burden for my family, and with valuable activities such gender-based violence workshops and educational field trips, I have even been able to meet interesting girls from different schools. Sisters to School is a major source of motivation for us! In the future, I intend to fight for equal opportunities for girls in my community to go to school, to succeed in school and to participate in the overall development of our country."
