Take Action: Support Girls’ Education in This Urgent Time
At Women’s Global Education Project (WGEP), we rely on a diverse range of funding sources—including private foundations, individual donors, corporate sponsors, and institutional grants—to ensure girls in rural sub-Saharan Africa have access to education.

On January 27, 2025, we received news that an Executive Order from the White House has suspended all USAID-funded projects, including Our Sisters Read, our vital literacy initiative in Kenya, which accounts for 26% of WGEP’s total funding.

This year, we had planned to reach over 10,000 students across 63 schools through our literacy interventions while also operating and staffing the Tharaka Library and ICT Center—a critical resource for students and educators. With this funding now paused, we are working urgently to minimize disruption and ensure these students continue to have access to the education they deserve.

What This Means

This decision directly impacts the operations of WGEP’s recently opened community library and computer center in Tharaka, Kenya. This space has quickly become a crucial resource for students and educators. While this poses a challenge, our commitment to the girls and communities we serve remains unshaken.

How You Can Help

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, WGEP has built a strong foundation that allows us to continue providing critical literacy and education programs. However, we need your support to bridge this unexpected funding gap and ensure minimal disruption to our work.

Your contribution today will help us:
✅ Keep our library and computer center in Tharaka-Nithi County open
✅ Maintain essential reading activities for young learners in schools
✅ Retain Our Sisters Read Staff who deliver essential literacy programming for students

Thank you for standing with us. Together, we can ensure that every child continues to have access to the opportunities they deserve, no matter the circumstances.
