Our Story
A movement begins one girl at a time.
Women’s Global Education Project (WGEP) began with a vision for girls’ education inspired by founder Amy Maglio’s Peace Corps service in rural Senegal. Living in a village without running water or electricity, Amy saw firsthand the transformative power of education when she helped her host sister, Khady, attend school for the first time. The impact on Khady’s confidence and future potential fueled Amy’s commitment to helping more girls access education.
Starting around her dining room table, Amy launched WGEP with the goal of providing access to education and empowerment programs for women and girls who are often left without a choice in their futures. Since then, WGEP has reached over 50,000 women, girls, and boys in Senegal and Kenya, expanding opportunities in over 150 villages. Today, WGEP is dedicated to addressing the many social, economic, and cultural barriers that keep girls out of school. Through community-driven partnerships and comprehensive programs, WGEP empowers girls to pursue education, develop leadership skills, and become agents of change.
Each initiative is carefully crafted with local leaders to ensure that the programs meet the community’s unique needs. WGEP’s work proves that investing in girls’ education creates a ripple effect, transforming lives and uplifting entire communities. By helping every girl pursue her education, WGEP is changing narratives and unlocking the potential for a brighter, more equitable future.
