Tharaka Women’s Welfare Programme (TWWP)

Formerly known as NTANIRA NA MUGAMBO or Circumcision with Words, TWWP is a women-led, community-based organization in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya. Founded in 2005, the Tharaka Women’s Welfare Programme (TWWP) works to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM) through an Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP) program. It has since expanded to promote girls' education through scholarships, offer adult literacy classes for mothers, and provide life skills training to support women’s economic and social well-being, empowering women and girls to participate in community development actively. WGEP Senegal

WGEP Senegal collaborates with local partners to deliver programs like Sisters to School and Our Sisters Lead. These programs empower youth with leadership skills through workshops and retreats on topics they choose, such as public speaking, advocacy, and environmental stewardship. Since launching Our Sisters Lead (OSL) in November 2023, participants have led impactful community discussions and radio programs, reaching thousands. The OSL program also includes positive masculinity workshops, engaging men and boys as allies in promoting women’s rights and preventing gender-based violence.

HOPE for Girls @ VISA (HFG@V)

HOPE for Girls @ VISA (HFG@V) is a community-based organization working in Migori County, Kenya, to rescue girls from the dangers of FGM and to empower them with education and life skills. The organization was started by a group of champions/friends who opened their homes to rescue 10 girls who were running away home to avoid FGM. In 2023, HFG@V and WGEP began a partnership to expand this work, supporting the eradication of FGM and the promotion of girls’ education. To learn more, visit https://hopeforgirls.or.ke/.

Enkishon Sidai Africa

We are pleased to announce WGEP’s expansion to Kenya’s Maasai Mara Region through our newest partnership with Enkishon Sidai Africa, a non-profit advocating for children's rights, ending harmful cultural practices like FGM and early marriage, and promoting girls' education in Narok County’s Narok East and Narok South Constituencies. In this remote region, girls face immense barriers to education, including long travel distances, lack of resources, and cultural expectations that prioritize marriage over learning. Founded by Purity Kurraru, a Maasai woman who has witnessed these challenges firsthand, Enkishon Sidai Africa reflects her deep commitment to creating opportunities for girls. In the pilot year of our partnership, WGEP is funding scholarships for 36 girls and providing hygiene kits for 54 girls, helping remove key barriers to their education and paving the way for a brighter future. Femme Plus

WGEP partnered with Femme Plus in Senegal to implement the Sisters to School Program, promoting literacy and lifelong learning among rural primary school students, especially girls. The program built reading skills for thousands of students by providing access to technology centers, mobile labs, and trained professionals while motivating students with contests, mentorships, and book clubs. It also created community centers to foster literacy and involved program graduates as mentors. Community outreach in Senegal has shifted attitudes toward girls' education, ensuring lasting support for literacy and future generations.
