Sisters Through our flagship program, Sisters to School, Women’s Global examined the issues that keep girls from accessing education in the communities we serve and developed solutions that address these issues on multiple levels: Help more girls enroll in school by providing need-based elementary school scholarships for girls whose families are not able to send them to school because of lack of funds Help more girls stay in school by providing secondary school scholarships to girls who finish elementary school, as well as providing mentoring and after-school tutoring for both our scholars and other girls whose families can afford tuition but need extra help with exam preparation to pass rigorous grade-level exams Help break down barriers that prevent girls from receiving and completing their education. We achieve this through such activities as:
Strengthen the capacity of local partner organizations so that they can successfully implement girls’ education programs and be effective leaders in their community
Through Sisters to School, Women's Global provides: 240 scholarships to girls in Senegal and Kenya--145 full scholarships covering tuition, school fees, supplies, tutoring, mentoring, and room and board if necessary; and 95 partial scholarships for girls already enrolled in school but who still need additional help with school supplies and after-school tutoring Adult literacy classes for 250 women to help them support their daughters in school Health education for nearly 400 scholars and family members to address illness prevention and prevent health-related absences from school Educators’ training for 180 Senegalese educators to strengthen classroom and mentoring skills and to help them affect education policy issues on a broader level Community Awareness for nearly 3,000 boys and girls, parents, village leaders, and community members around the importance of education for girls and women’s rights An alternative rite of passage program to combat female genital mutilation (FGM) program in Kenya that has helped 260 girls and their families say “No!” to FGM |
